The London system is the same as Montreal's Bixi - which has exported to many cities around the world, NYC included.

Have a look here:

We'll soon have overseas competition: http://citibikenyc.com/

Just from the look of the bikes and docks, it's surely the same system as ours.

Replying to @matthew barry's post:

No doubt in the next few days my theory will be proved wrong and I will find that my key won't fit and I will be ordering a new one!

No doubt! Mine was working flawlessly until yesterday. Not even a hint of trouble. That said, it was attached to my house keys keyring, so it has certainly been through the mill. I've had it since day 1 of the scheme - perhaps you've got 30 days or so before a daily "borussian roulette" of will it/won't it fit.

I'm mildly sad that my 'Boris Bike Original' key is out of commission now.

I have had my key since about a month after the start and so far, it seems to be holding up. My key sits in my wallet all by itself and I wonder it is more likely to split if it spends it's life getting bashed about by keys on a key ring? Obviously with the hole drilled in the fob there is an expectation that it will sit on a key ring and on the evidence of on 2 occasions finding a key left in the docking station attached to a bunch of keys, that would appear to be the case. No doubt in the next few days my theory will be proved wrong and I will find that my key won't fit and I will be ordering a new one!

Finally happened to me yesterday too. I really should have followed the prescribed advice and ordered a new key before. At a glance there's no perceptible change in the key. It hasn't noticably expanded.

A shame - now that the rain's stopped I was looking forward to some BB'ing this weekend. <img src="http://www.borisbikes.org/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_cry.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

Anyway, a new key is ordered and promised within 3 working days. Am sure it will arrive just as the rain resumes next week.

Long time users - don't delay: get a new key!

Hi All,

I’m hoping you might be able to help… I’m planning on taking part in a charity bike ride, London to Cambridge and currently don’t have a bike. I was thinking about using a borris bike for the “fun” value and in a hope that it might make people donate a little more.

I wanted to ask if anyone else has done something similar on the borris bikes and how feasible an idea it would is? I use them for my daily commute 20min each way but never done or thought about anything like this. Many thanks for any help / comments in advanced,

Cheers,

James

Hi,

I recently launched a new Android app for finding you nearest docking stations.

Dockr is a little different from the other apps around in that it's focused on being as simple as possible - it just does the essentials of showing you the nearest docking stations to where you are now and how many bikes or spaces there are. I've tried hard to make it look good too (you don't pay all that money for your phone just to have ugly apps on it!)

Get it direct from the Google Play: http://bit.ly/KQ6GYT

Or check out the website: http://dockr.co.uk/

I hope you enjoy it and I would really appreciate any feedback. (If you like it please give it a rating on Google Play <img src="http://www.borisbikes.org/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" /> )

The polls have closed!

Londoners on Bikes, and LCC, both pointed to Jenny and Ken as the best bet for safer cycling. I've voted for them.

Cycle hire was long in the planning before Boris came on the scene, and it will survive his departure, whether that be tonight, or in another 4 years time.

So... Boris Bike lovers and users.

Today is the day and there is no thread on the election!

Are we all voting for Boris in gratitude for our beloved steeds? Or for Jenny and/or Ken in the hope that they'll improve things faster and further?

Despite my love of the BB, I can't quite bring myself to vote for Boris and his (in my view) largely "anti-sensible-cycling" views.

Over the last few weeks the level of faulty bikes seems to have been steadily rising, whole banks in some cases, this requires yest another tramp around the streets to find a working bike... This is rather worrying...

Maybe it's time to start looking for a town bike, this is affecting my timekeeping!

The buses are redirected eastbound north of Oxford Street since Crossrail works reduced Oxford Street to one lane so better bus journey times all round, if they chose to keep the arrangement.

But I agree with cyclingnewbie that Oxford Street is not a typical London street and needs a holistic and unique approach whatever it is they decide to do.

10,000 people on a rather horrid day was a great turnout. Let's hope the message gets through.

"Tottenham Court Road is a more interesting one. Camden council are genuinely considering converting this to semi-pedestrianised for bicycles only - two way traffic would be diverted to Gower St instead."

Really? I hope they do. <img src="http://www.borisbikes.org/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Perhaps that could be part of a more joined up North-South segregated cycle route in London

^ traffic one way, two way cycle lane. That way neither the cycle lane nor the pedestrians getting on/off the bus get in the way. Deliveries allowed down Oxford Street evenings only. The outcome? Better bus journey times. They did it in Tottenham Court Road and the world didn't end.

But I expect the black cabbies wouldn't agree.

So... surprised to see big majority to 'police them'.

What forms of 'policing them' do people think work best? For example (not sure how this would work) cameras? Remote policing? Physical law enforcement presence on the streets? Which junctions should they focus on?

Went to the Critical Mass ride yesterday for the first time. Didn't realise it wasn't just for cyclists though, loads of people on inline skates, skateboards etc, was fun! <img src="http://www.borisbikes.org/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Hope many of you will be at tomorrow's Big Ride through London, organised to push for better cycling facilities from the mayoral candidates. As well as have a good morning out of course <img src="http://www.borisbikes.org/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

The ride is assembling on Park Lane at 11am, see you there on your Boris bike!

I never mentioned parking - I was talking about buses and taxis stopping.

Yes, I admit I used an extreme example in citing Oxford Street, but it was to emphasise the problems that would have to be considered.

Yes indeed. Who parks outside shops to go shopping in London anyway? This isn't LA!!

The shops argument is a joke anyway.

Just like in pedestrianised areas - retailers always resist and then later find out that they're actually better off without having cars parking in front. Virtually all studies find the same thing.

That's a terrible example Bimble - Oxford Street is not a typical London road - it is unique in its problems (should have been fully pedestrianised years ago IMO).

Tottenham Court Road is a more interesting one. Camden council are genuinely considering converting this to semi-pedestrianised for bicycles only - two way traffic would be diverted to Gower St instead.

There are many wide busy roads, with few shops, which could easily spare some roadspace for a cycle lane.
